It is, as I thought, Asian. As an offshoot of Tai Pan (on Waverley) Steam specializes in the same cuisine: Hong Kong and dim sum, most of which is steamed. Starters run from $4 to $6, all the dum sum items are $3, noodles and rice dishes (including soups) $8, and the mains $8, $10, and $12. All six wines (four reds, two whites) are $6 (by the glass only). Desserts are called steamed sweets and go for $4.
Now, the room. They have transformed the space previously occupied by Andalé Taqueria and Kan Zeman/Mediterranean Wraps into a contemporary and pretty classy space with dark chairs and rectangular tables (seating up to four). The open kitchen area takes up about half the indoor space, so the outdoor tables are likely to be frequently used. It’s the best that space has looked in a decade. My guess is that the reasonable prices will draw people in and if the quality is like Tai Pan’s they will keep coming back. The website is not yet up and running; I will link the name to it on the Restaurants page and delete this sentence when it is.
