In the better-late-than-never department, Wahlburgers is finally open at 185 University (corner Emerson), former home of Sam’s Chowder House, Lavanda, and the Good Earth. Burgers begin around $10 and go up from there. They do have a turkey burger (and other sandwiches including a portobello and salads) but no veggie burger. But leaving all that aside, the exciting news is that they have – even here – haddock! (It’s in a sandwich.) Whenever I go to Boston my first objective is to eat some haddock (broiled if for dinner, in a sandwich if for lunch). There is no comparable fish on the west coast. And while they do have a full bar, they also have frappes! One of the many reasons I still have a 617 cell phone.
Coming soon at 509 University in that new building on the corner of Cowper (replacing, among other things, the building that housed Shokolaat) is Joe & the Juice, a very hip chain from that very hip country Denmark. Let’s just be thankful there are no wayward umlauts in the name. They’re hiring now so if you are interested click on this.
Finally, I am happy to report that Café Venetia at 419 University is expanding, but not by simply growing the coffee bar. Next door to the Café (at 417 University) will be Enoteca Venetia, a wine bar. The Café has always carried a small selection of wine, but the Enoteca should be a real treat if it delves into the astonishingly diverse range of Italian wines. They say there are 650 different grapes that grow in Italy, way, way more than grow in France (partly because of regulation in France), and many of these are clear portraits of where they come from. I can’t wait.

New Year’s update part 3: birth and growth
